Assessment

Assessment of MFL at St Andrew’s involves the key strands of the Language Curriculum:

  • Speaking French
  • Listening to French (and identifying key elements of the spoken language)
  • Reading French (and answering key questions)
  • Writing French (from words and sentences to composing short paragraphs.
  • Knowledge about languages
  • Knowledge about Culture

Informal assessment will take place at the beginning of each taught unit, in order to ascertain prior knowledge and its recall. For example, the teacher will begin by asking pupils what they already know about this topic and using the Language Angels unit to recap previous learning if necessary.

Assessment occurs within each lesson through:

  • Observation of role play and game activities
  • Oracy of spoken answers or during small group/paired discussions
  • Marking of written work, quizzes, listening activities and reading tasks, in accordance with our school marking policy

Pupils also have access to Language Angels knowledge organisers, where they can assess how they are achieving as the unit progresses.

At the end of each unit, teachers use the Language Angels tasks- speaking, listening, reading, and writing- to inform an overall assessment of the unit. Pupils have opportunities for self-assessment using the ‘I can’ statements.
