St Andrew's English Intent

We believe that high quality teaching will enable pupils to speak, read and write fluently so that they can communicate their ideas and emotions to others and read both for pleasure and to gain information. We believe that fluency in the English language is an essential foundation for success in all subjects and our teachers develop pupils' spoken language, reading, writing and vocabulary as integral aspects of the teaching of every subject.

We aim to ensure that all pupils:

  • read fluently with good understanding
  • develop the habit of reading widely for pleasure and to gain information
  • acquire a wide vocabulary and an understanding of grammar and of linguistic conventions to enhance their reading, writing and speaking
  • appreciate our rich and varied literacy heritage
  • write clearly, accurately and coherently for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences
